Thank you to all of the 20 amazing volunteers who helped spread Holiday cheer while creating neighbourly connections that will carry on beyond the Holiday season. Thank you to Kitsilano Neighbourhood House for making this project possible!

The Good Neighbour volunteers, aged from 0.5-90 years old, came together with their partners, children, grandchildren, senior parents, and families to bake cookies. From classic chocolate chip and sugar cookies, festive ginger snaps and snickerdoodles, to exquisite matcha pistachio white chocolate, volunteers put a lot of love and care into preparing a festive treat for their neighbours. After carefully packaging the treats and signing cards with a Holiday greeting, they knocked on their neighbours’ doors to deliver Holiday cheer! Needless to say, everyone was pleased to receive such an unexpected surprise. The Good Neighbour volunteers share how a simple kind gesture of connection can create a meaningful impact:

A neighbour I had seen at least half a dozen times and he always had a furrowed brow and looked stressed. When I handed him the cookies, he broke out into a huge grin – it was the first time I had ever seen him smile!

When I shared the baked goods with one neighbour, she commented how grateful she is to receive homemade treats. Her husband passed away in the fall, and she said these small gestures mean a lot to her.

An elderly woman shared that she was alone and lonely so we invited her to join us for the Kits House potluck.

It was a great opportunity to teach my daughter about giving back and how great that can feel too! On a wet winter day, people seemed really cheered to see us and receive a cookie with nothing else in exchange!

I remember my mom taking me to share treats with our neighbours during Holidays, when I was a kid. It means a lot to continue this tradition with my son.

While the Good Neighbour Holiday Cookies Campaign has come to an end, acts of kindness and connections can happen any time of the year!
